Description

• General description: Naphthalene is an aromatic hydrocarbon[1], found to be nonpolar in nature.[2] It is generally produced from petroleum or coal-tar.[1] Naphthalene, an organic compound, is widely used as an intermediate in chemical and plastic industry. Its other applications include, its role in the manufacturing of fungicides/insecticides[3] and as a model compound for investigating the metabolism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by bacteria. The metabolism of this compound by Polaromonas naphthalenivorans CJ2 via the gentisate pathway followed by respirometry, GC-MS and cell-free enzyme assay has been studied.[4]
