Description
- General description: Protodioscin is a steroidal saponin found in a variety of plant species.[1] It consists of aglycone and glycone moieties[2] and occurs as an active ingredient of the herbal aphrodisiac Tribulus terrestris used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine.[3][4]
- Application: Protodioscin has been used to study the inhibitory effect of fenugreek and quinoa extracts on the activity of α-amylase and pancreatic lipase under in vitro traditional conditions[1]. It has also been used as a standard in the study to carry out the structural characterization of the steroidal saponins extracted from Smilax trinervula.[2]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Protodioscin shows a notable inhibitory effect on digestive enzymes such as α-amylase and pancreatic lipase. It is posited to increase the levels of testosterone, luteinizing hormone, dehydroepiandrosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate along with improving libido and spermatogenesis in humans and animals.[3][4] It exhibits anti-tumor activity especially against leukemia, colon cancer, and prostate cancer.[5]
