- Activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM; CD166) is a 105 kD cell-surface adhesion molecule belonging to the Ig superfamily of receptors
- ALCAM is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein, possessing five extracellular Ig domains, a transmembrane domain, and a short cytoplasmic tail
- ALCAM is involved in homotypic adhesion, as well as heterotypic adhesion with its natural ligand, CD6
- A soluble isoform of ALCAM has been shown to inhibit homophilic adhesive interactions
- ALCAM is expressed on a variety of cell types, including activated T and B cells, monocyte-derived dendritic cells, and thymic epithelial cells
- ALCAM expression has also been used as a marker for the isolation of pluripotent stem cells
- This gene encodes activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM), also known as CD166 (cluster of differentiation 166), which is a member of a subfamily of immunoglobulin receptors with five immunoglobulin-like domains (VVC2C2C2) in the extracellular domain
- This protein binds to T-cell differentiation antigene CD6, and is implicated in the processes of cell adhesion and migration
- Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found.
