Description
- rRNA (ribosomal RNA) forms a major structural component of ribosomes which provides a mechanism for decoding mRNA information into amino acids/proteins through the process of translation
- rRNA plays a key role in accurate positioning of mRNA as well as peptidyl tRNA, and also plays a structural role in peptidyl transferase activity by generating scaffolds where ribosomal proteins are assembled
- rRNA is generated inside nucleolus, which is localized in nucleus of the cells and contains genes essential for encoding rRNA
- Defective rRNA may implicate in certain pathologies, for example: decreased rRNA expression has been observed in subjects with myelodysplastic syndromes, and abnormal rRNA expression has also been linked to Alzheimer's disease.
