- General description: Norfloxacin is an antimicrobial drug, belonging to the class of fluoroquinolones (FQs), which shows broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms.[1]
- Application: Norfloxacin may be used as an analytical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in pharmaceutical formulations,[1] biological fluids[1] and sewage[2] using various chromatography techniques.
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Norfloxacin blocks DNA replication by interfering with an ATP-induced structural transition of DNA complexed with DNA gyrase (topoisomerase).Mode of action: inhibits bacterial DNA replicationAntimicrobial spectrum: Gram-negative bacteria; less effective against Gram-positive bacteria
