Description
- General description: Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is the second most plenteous glycerophospholipid in eukaryotic cells.[1] It is a non-bilayer forming phospholipid, which is found majorly in the mitochondria.[2] It consists of a small polar head group with fatty acid chains.[1]
- Application: 18:2 PE has been used for the preparation of liposomes.[3]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) functions as to provide rigidity to the cell membranes via hexagonal phase structures which promote tight packing of the membrane bilayer formed by phosphatidylcholine.[1] It is also involved in the conversion of prions from the non-toxic to toxic conformation. PE also initiates the autophagosome formation by attaching covalently to the autophagy Atg8 protein.[2]
