Description
- General description: Gangliosides are glycosphingolipids containing a hydrophobic ceramide and hydrophilic oligosaccharide chain.[1] They are found in various tissues and fluids in vertebrates, especially in human brain and bovine milk.[2] The most common gangliosides in milk are 2NeuAc−2Hex−Cer (GD3) and NeuAc−2Hex−Cer (GM3).[2]
- Application: Ganglioside GD3 (Bovine Milk) is suitable as a lipid standard in Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometric analysis[3] and liquid chromatography−mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) data analysis.[4]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Gangliosides are involved in neuronal development, neuropathologic processes, receptor interactions with protein hormones, interferon, fibronectin and toxins from bacteria,[5] They are also essential for the development of intestinal immunity by producing intestinal IgA and cytokine.[6]
