- Biochem/physiol Actions: Sodium tetraborate decahydrate also called borax.[4] Guar gum based gels crosslinked by borax are effective for wastewater treatment.[5] Borax is used in the preparation of detergents and cosmetics. Borax elicits toxicity in the brain especially in aquatic organisms resulting in edema and congestion.[6]
