Description

  • General description: Potassium bromate (KBrO3) is a colorless solid having trigonal crystals. On heating above 430°C, it degrades and liberates oxygen. It is strongly oxidizing in nature. Its industrial synthesis from potassium bromide via anodic oxidation has been reported.[1] Its quantitative estimation by sensitive flow-injection chemiluminescence method has been proposed.[2] Its standardization has been reported by iodometric titration against sodium thiosulphate (hypo) solution.[3]
  • Application: Potassium bromate (KBrO3) may be used in volumetric determinations.[1] It may be used as an oxidizing reagent for the oxidation of neomenthol. Kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation reaction has been investigated.[3]
  • Other Notes: For the in situ production of bromine in TLC[4]; Primary standard for bromometry[5]
