Description
- General description: Phosphatidylcholines (PC) are the building blocks of eukaryotic membranes. It is also found at high levels in C. elegans lipid extracts.[1] It is a strong bilayer-forming lipid.[2] PC is an important component of the mucosal layer of the colon.[3]
- Application: Egg PC has been used:as lipid standard to evaluate the chromatographic column characteristics[1]as a component in the surfactant comixture for theαVβ3 targeted nanoparticles[4]in liposome preparation[5]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Phosphatidylcholine (PC) functions as a surfactant within the mucus to form a hydrophobic surface to inhibit bacterial penetrance.[3] It is used to treat fat embolism. Phosphatidylcholine lowers the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.[6]
