Description

  • Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (UniProt: P12643; also known as BMP-2, BMP-2A, Bone morphogenetic protein 2A) is encoded by the BMP2 (also known as BMP2A) gene (Gene ID 650) in human
  • BMP2 is a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily
  • It is synthesized as a 60kDa precursor that is processed in the secretory pathway to a small 18kDa monomer; 2 monomers then associate to form the active homodimer, which binds to its receptor
  • BMP2 can induce bone formation and regeneration during early embryonic development
  • It is also involved in the hedgehog pathway, TGF beta signaling pathway, and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction
  • BMP2 is known to induce cartilage and bone formation and stimulates the differentiation of myoblasts into osteoblasts via the EIF2AK3-EIF2A- ATF4 pathway
  • BMP2 activation of EIF2AK3 stimulates phosphorylation of EIF2A, which leads to increased expression of ATF4 that plays a critical role in osteoblast differentiation.
