Description

  • General description: Lactosylceramide (LacCer) is a glycosphingolipid,[1] which is found majorly in the nervous system and myelin sheath.[2] It comprises a hydrophobic ceramide lipid and a hydrophilic sugar moiety.[1]
  • Application: C16 Lactosyl(β) Ceramide (d18:1/16:0) or D-lactosyl-β-1,1′ N-palmitoyl-D-erythro-sphingosine has been used as a lipid standard in mass spectrometry imaging of lipids in human skin disease model hidradenitis suppurativa.[3] It may be used in the preparation of liposomes.[4]
  • Biochem/physiol Actions: Lactosylceramide (LacCer) is a structural and signaling lipid. It is crucial for signal transduction and cell adhesion.[2] LacCer facilitates microbial attachment and also acts as an adhesion receptor for pathogens.[1] It regulates cellular stress response and apoptosis. LacCer also modulates in cell proliferation and microbial pathogenesis. It is implicated in innate immune responses, host-tissue pathogen interactions and chronic inflammatory diseases.[3]
