Description
- General description: Hyocholic acid, also called the 3α,6α,7α-trihydroxy-5β-cholanoic acid, is synthesized by the 6α-hydroxylation of chenodeoxycholic acid. It is a primary trihydroxylated bile acid associated with pigs.[1] It is a minor bile acid in humans. Hyocholic acid is also synthesized from α-muricholic acid (MCA) in liver by the action of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4).[2]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Hyocholic acid levels are elevated in plasma and urine samples of patients with cholestatic liver disease and in hepatic cirrhosis.[2]
