Description

  • Specifically detects Prestin clone: 3A2.2 in Mouse samples, and it is validated for Western Blotting Prestin is a motor protein that converts auditory stimuli to length changes in outer hair cells and mediates sound amplification in the mammalian hearing organ
  • Prestin is a bidirectional voltage-to-force converter that can operate at microsecond rates
  • It uses cytoplasmic anions as extrinsic voltage sensors, probably chloride and bicarbonate to translocate anions toward or away from the extracellular plasma membrane surface
  • As a consequence, this translocation triggers conformational changes in Prestin that ultimately alter its surface area in the plane of the plasma membrane
  • Prestin acts as an incomplete transporter
  • It swings anions across the membrane, but does not allow these anions to dissociate and escape to the extracellular space and in that process it helps to modulate the electro-physical signals necessary for hearing
  • Prestin is expressed in outer hair cells and localized to the cell membrane
  • Mutations in Prestin can lead to deafness.
