Description

  • Serine protease inhibitor Kazal-type 1 (UniProt P00995; also known as Pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor, TATI, Tumor-associated trypsin inhibitor) is encoded by the SPINK1 (also known as PCTT, PSTI, TCP) gene (Gene ID 6690) in human
  • Serine protease inhibitor Kazal-type 1 encoded by the human SPINK1 gene functions as an acute-phase protein (APP) in the pancreas
  • Produced initially in a 79-a.a
  • proform, the signal peptide (a.a
  • 1-23) is removed posttranslationally to yield the 56-a.a
  • (a.a
  • 24-79) mature protein
  • SPINK1 protein blocks premature activation of trypsinogen (inactive form of trypsin), thereby ensuring the integrity of acinar cells to prevent auto-digestion of the pancreas
  • SPINK1 is also reported to play a role in tissue repair, apoptosis, reproduction, and behave as a growth factor in other human organs
  • In addition, SPINK1 protein is known as tumor-associated trypsin inhibitor or TATI and current research activities are focused on the association of various cancers to deregulated SPINK1 activity.
